1.Introduction
Air-hardening medium-alloy cold-work tool steels cover multiple grades including A2, A3, A4, A6, A7, A8, A9 and A10. Also known as Group A steels, they contain sufficient manganese, molybdenum and chromium. These alloying elements enable workpieces with a diameter of at least 100 mm (4 inches) to achieve full hardness under air cooling.
Group A steels have a carbon content ranging from 0.5% to 2%. Featuring air-hardening properties, they exhibit minimal distortion and cracking during quenching.
The following provides an overview of A3 air-hardening medium-alloy cold-work tool steel.A3 steel is mainly used for slitting machines and mold forming parts.Typical applications of A3 tool steel include cold forging dies, coining dies, cold heading dies, shear blades, knurling tools, as well as cutting tools for paper, wood, fiber and resin-bonded materials.

2.4 Heat treatment Related
• Forged of A3 Tool steel
Slowly heated the A3 steel material to 650-680°C (1202-1256°F) before raising the temperature to 1050-1100°C (1922-2120°F) and soak A3 tool steel material until uniformly heated. Initial hammer blows should be light due to the comparatively high hot strength of this steel.
The A3 steel forged temperature should be maintained above 1000°C(1832℉) until the A3 steel metal begins to yield. Final forged should not be done below 900°C(1652℉). Slowly cool after forged is essential to avoid the possibility of cracking.
• Annealing of A3 Tool steel
Slowly heated A3 steel to 850-870 ℃(1562-1598°F) and allow enough times, let the steel to be thoroughly heated, Then cool slowly in the furnace at a rate of 4°C (40°F) per hour or less.. The A3 tool steel will get MAX 250 HB (Brinell hardness).
• Hardening of A3 tool steel
A3 steels should be heated uniformly to 790-820°C (1436-1508°F) until completely heated through. Then heated to the hardening temperature of 950-980°C(1742-1796℉), soak at the temperature enough time, let A3 steel to be thoroughly heated .
Then withdraw A3 steel tools from the furnace, either air cool or oil quench.
• Tempering of A3 tool steel
Tempering of A3 steels is performed at 150-400°C (302-752°F), Soak well at the selected temperature and soak for at least one hour per 25mm of total thickness. Get Rockwell C hardness of 57 to 62. Others different Heat treatment temperature will get different hardness. Below only for reference.
2.5 Main Features of A3 Tool Steel
A3 Tool Steel offers several key features that make it suitable for cold-working applications:
• Excellent Wear Resistance: A3 Tool Steel is highly resistant to wear, making it ideal for tools exposed to friction and stress, such as punches and dies. Our enhanced alloying process further optimizes its wear resistance, making it the top choice for heavy-duty applications.
• High Toughness: It can withstand high impact forces without cracking, which is crucial for tools and dies used in heavy-duty applications. At SteelPRO Group, we integrate advanced heat treatment techniques to maximize this toughness.
• Good Machinability: Despite its hardness, A3 Tool Steel is easy to machine, allowing manufacturers to create precise tools with minimal wear on equipment. Our team ensures that each product’s machinability is optimized for efficiency and precision in every project.
• Moderate Hardness: The steel can be heat-treated to achieve a hardness range of 28-34 HRc when oil-quenched, ensuring it retains a sharp cutting edge during operation.
• Air-Hardened: A3 Tool Steel is air-hardened, meaning it doesn’t require quenching in a liquid bath, making it easier to handle during heat treatment.
2.6 Machining of A3 Tool Steel
A3 tool steel features relatively high hardness yet retains reasonable machinability when compared with other high-carbon steel materials. At SteelPRO Group, we offer professional machining recommendations to help customers achieve optimal results when processing A3 tool steel.
• Welding: A3 tool steel has poor weldability and welding is not recommended. If welding is unavoidable, preheating and post-weld heat treatment must be applied to prevent cracking. SteelPRO Group provides detailed welding guidelines for safe machining and minimal material damage.
• Cutting: Use carbide tools or high-speed steel (HSS) tools for milling and turning. Maintain a moderate cutting speed to avoid overheating.
• Grinding: Perform fine grinding to achieve precision. Use carbide grinding wheels with sufficient coolant to prevent overheating.
• Drilling: Drill with HSS or carbide drill bits at low feed rates with coolant applied.
• Tooling: Carbide inserts deliver good wear resistance and are suitable for higher cutting speeds.
Coolant is critical throughout all machining operations. It extends tool life and prevents overheating. We supply complete machining solutions to guarantee optimal performance for customers processing A3 tool steel.
