Saw-cut mold steel is usually cheaper on the purchase order. Pre-machined steel costs more upfront, but that extra cost can disappear quickly if it saves steel weight, setup time, CNC hours, and machine waiting time. For a small block and an available milling machine, saw-cut may be the obvious choice. For a large block, expensive steel, or a shop that is already busy, pre-machining can easily be the cheaper route overall.

If the part already meets the required flatness, parallelism, thickness, and surface finish after it is unclamped and inspected, there is little reason to grind it again. Grinding becomes useful when those final requirements are difficult to hold by milling alone, or when heat treatment has moved the part. This is especially common with precision flat faces, hardened inserts, large plates, and parts where two opposite surfaces must stay closely parallel.

What matters is whether it can cut two opposite faces to the required size, keep them parallel, hold squareness to the chosen datum, and repeat the result once the machine is warm. A practical check usually starts with the installation and machine level, then moves to spindle and cutter condition, head alignment, parallelism and squareness. CNC positioning is checked when the machine specification requires it. After that, make a controlled test cut and inspect the finished part at several points. If the numbers repeat and stay inside the OEM or contract limits, the machine can be accepted.
